Heat: Use Zoo Meds Daylight Blue Reptile Bulb for daytime heat (up to 60 watts) or Zoo Meds Nightlight Red Reptile Bulb for 24 hour heat (up to 60 watts).
Eliminates risk of vitamin D3 overdose (highly toxic) from synthetic sources. A full 5% UVB output allows vitamin D3 synthesis to occur naturally, preventing or reversing MBD and other health problems in turtles and tortoises, Bearded Dragons, Iguanas, and all other diurnal reptiles. Safer than adding powdered or liquid synthetic D3 supplements, as the UVB wavelength allows all reptiles the ability to regulate their own Vitamin D levels by endogenous synthesis as they would in nature.
The ReptiSun 5.0 is effective for UVB induced photo conversion of vitamin D3 in reptiles' skin at distances up to 12", so should be placed about 12" from reptile's basking site.
The Science of Light
UVA wavelength increases appetite, activity, and helps to induce reproductive behavior in captive reptiles.
Spectral power distribution studies show that tungsten filament bulbs (Neodymium bulbs or spot lamps) do not emit UVB and therefore do not assist the animals in D3 synthesis or calcium absorption.
This lamp should be placed 12 inches from your animals basking site, and should be on for 10 - 12 hours a day to maintain your animals day and night cycle.
Bulbs last a minimum of one year before diminishing wavelength. (Replace Bulb at 1 year.)
The new ReptiSun® Compact Fluorescent lamps use a special UVB transmitting quartz glass for maximum UVB penetration. Cool burning, compact fluorescent bulbs screw into standard threaded sockets, eliminating the need for a separate ballast. Lamp can be oriented either vertically or horizontally in your reptile hood or clamp lamp fixture. UVB emissions help prevent or reverse metabolic bone disease and UVA increases feeding, mating, and other natural behaviors.
Highest quality. Made in Germany.
Bulbs emit: 10% UVB and 30% UVA
Note: These lamps need specific line voltages; they cannot be used with dimmers/rheostats.
