Horse Halters are a common type of headgear used on a horse. Halters have no bit. They are most commonly used by a person on the ground leading or directing a horse's movement. It is also used for tying, preferred because bridles are usually made of lighter materials (which can break) and have a bit that can cause harm if a horse panics, rears up, falls or fights the tie-out.

Some trainers feel that rope halters give more control, as they are thinner and exert more pressure on the poll when a horse fights his confinement.

Nylon web halters are wider, have less leverage and are more attractive.

Some horse owners leave a halter on at all times, risking an injury if a horse is snagged or caught by the halter in a pasture when unattended. A better solution might be a break-away halter that will break loose in a panic situation before injury is caused to the animal.

Whether you tie a horse with a breakaway type of halter or a sturdy halter that will not release unless purposely released by the handler depends on which is the greater danger: panic injury or disappearance and possible injury to the animal if loose.

    There are a lot of places that sell cheap, standard halters. We've actually discontinued all of our standard halters!

    Many inexpensive halters are of such inferior quality that we worry about the safety of our clients and their horses. Poor quality hardware and inferior, single or double-ply nylon makes them very risky - even dangerous in extreme circumstances where the joints or hardware might fail at a critical time.

    We've personally used Accent Deluxe Horse Halters on everything from Frisian stallions to Caspian yearlings, and every other halter has paled in comparison to this outstanding piece of equipment.     Accent deluxe halter features non-fade nylon with triple ply cheek straps, heat sealed "no-tear" holes, diamond stitching for extra strength, superior quality solid brass hardware, a comfortable, rolled throat strap, adjustable chin strap, and our unique, patented, equi-snap™.

    Equi-snap™ is a specially designed, stainless steel spring snap, which will not rub the horse or catch on fences (see close-up below). It's much easier to fasten than the conventional snap currently used on most horse halters. You can slip the halter on like a bridle instead of constantly trying to figure out which way is up or inside-out. Shortens tack time and makes catching in the pasture easier.
