Low Range pH testing that is accurate and easy
Tetratest Freshwater Ph Test Kit
Low Range pH testing that is accurate and easy
    Freshwater pH Test Kit
  • It's important to monitor the pH value of your freshwater aquarium. A pH value of 6.5 to 8.0 will suit most species of freshwater aquarium fish, but a sudden or significant pH change can occur when tap water is added. That's why you should always check both aquarium and tap water pH before adding water to your aquarium. The Tetratest® pH Kit was professionally developed to accurately and quickly determine the pH level in your freshwater aquarium. The kit contains one 10-ml test reagent (enough for 50 tests), a test vial, color scale, instructions and recommendations.
Test the water in your aquarium weekly to ensure optimum water quality.

Know your water's GH to choose fish suitable to your area's water source.
Tetratest Carbonate Hardness Test Kit
Know your water's GH to choose fish suitable to your area's water source.
    Carbonate Hardness Test Kit
  • The General Hardness (GH) of water has a direct influence on the regulatory functions of fish (fish skin, gills, and eggs), plants and microorganisms. A favorable GH value for most ornamental fish between 6° and 16° dH (degrees of German hardness). Often forgotten or lost in significance to testing pH, ammonia, and nitrite, General Hardness is vital to selecting fish suitable to local water supplies or testing the performance of advanced filtration methods including reverse osmosis or deionization. This kit contains one 10-ml test reagent, a test vial and instructions and recommendations. This kit is for Freshwater (including outdoor ponds), Brackish and Saltwater.

The Science of Carbonate Hardness (aka - Alkalinity, Buffering Capacity):

Alkalinity or Carbonate Hardness (KH) is a measure of the buffering capacity of water, or its ability to resist change in pH. Aquariums where alkalinity is allowed to drop too long or too low can often suffer a situation where the pH then "crashes" to levels below 5.0 - leading to very inefficient or total loss of biological filtration and direct irritation or stress on some fish species.

Although commercial chemical buffers are available, natural water relies primarily on a carbonate-bicarbonate buffer system, hence the name hobby use of "carbonate hardness". Favorable levels of carbonate hardness are between 3° and 10° dH. This kit contains one 10-ml test reagent, a test vial and instructions and recommendations.

Test the water in your aquarium weekly to ensure optimum water quality.

Kordon's AquaTru Test Kits were designed for accuracy with several important criteria in mind:
Kordon Aquatru Master Test Kit
Kordon's AquaTru Test Kits were designed for accuracy with several important criteria in mind:

1-Dry, stable reagents
2-Dated reagents
3-Accurate, translucent color comparators
4-Comprehensive instructions
5-Measurement ranges that are correct for aquarium use.

AquaTru Water Quality Test Kits pioneered the use of dry reagents for use in aquarium water testing. The major advantage of dry reagents is in their shelf life. Dry reagents are more stable than liquid reagents, which means the aquarist can perform tests with the confidence of knowing the results will be as accurate as possible when using a "calorimetric" type test. Kordon also dates their reagents. All manufacturer's reagents, whether dry or liquid, are subject to degradation. Because the reagent chemicals break down over time, it is important to know the age of the reagents and their expected life.

AquaTru's color comparator system has been carefully designed to reflect the needs of the concerned aquarist. The top is flared to make adding reagents easier, the wide base increases stability and a special sliding window helps make color comparisons more accurate. The color strip consists of translucent colors applied to a durable plastic, rather than a printed paper card. The translucent color strip allows light to pass through, providing a much more accurate match when comparing the cube's colors to those produced by the reagents. Reflected colors, such as those produced on a printed comparator do not match well when compared with the translucent colors in a test cube.

The quality of tap water varies widely and aquarium systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated (and expensive). It is increasingly important to monitor water conditions carefully in the aquarium. It is equally important to select only top quality, reliable test equipment to monitor these conditions. It is beyond the scope of most aquarists to analyze the accuracy of a test kit. They must depend on the manufacturer to provide them with accurate, dependable test kits, and a staff available to answer questions and resolve problems. Kordon has taken pride in providing professional quality test kits and test kit consultation... for over 15 years.

Two critical tests for fresh and saltwater tanks
Tetratest Nitrite & Nitrate Test Kits
Two critical tests for fresh and saltwater tanks
    Nitrite & Nitrate Test Kits
  • Nitrate is the end product of biological filtration and the result of decomposition of nitrite. It can also be present in tap water supplies, especially in areas of high fertilizer run-off. Although virtually non-toxic to fish, nitrate is a key algae nutrient and high concentrations can harm your fish.

Nitrate testing is also an indicator of general water quality and filter function; as biological filtration converts ammonia to nitrite and finally to nitrate, other important chemical changes take place in the aquarium. These changes can include the loss of alkalinity (buffering capacity) or the accumulation of phosphate - thus nitrate testing can indicate possible imbalances in other areas without directly testing each one.

Everything in one kit. Includes adjustment chemicals to treat improper pH if detected
A complete kit to measure and adjust pH. Tests pH levels from 6.0 to 7.6 and includes bottles of pH Up and pH Down to modify aquarium water pH to desired levels.

The Science of pH

pH is critical for both tropical and marine fish. Tropical fish (with the exception of African Cichlids) require a low pH (usually about 7.2 or so) to simulate their natural environment. However, pH of higher than 7.0 allows ammonia to become toxic, so be sure to keep a close watch on that parameter as well.

Nitrite is toxic to fish
Freshwater Nitirite Test Kit
aquarium Pharmaceuticals
Nitrite is toxic to fish
Toxic nitrite is produced by nitrifying bacteria in the biological filter as it breaks down ammonia. This kit tests for harmful nitrite and measures levels from 0 to 5.0 ppm.

The Science of Nitrite

High levels of nitrite quickly lead to fish death. Even trace amounts of nitrite stress fish, suppressing their immune system and, thereby, increase the likelihood of disease and subsequent fish loss.

Nitrite is produced by the biological filter. Beneficial bacteria in the biological filter convert toxic ammonia into toxic Nitrite (NO2-). The biological filter then converts nitrite into less-toxic nitrate (NO3-). If not removed, nitrite will prevent fish from carrying on normal respiration.

In a new freshwater aquarium, the nitrite level may surge to 10 ppm (mg/L) or more, and then fall rapidly as the biological filter becomes established. The nitrite will be converted to nitrate. This process may take several weeks. In an established aquarium, the nitrite level should always remain at 0 ppm (mg/L). The presence of nitrite indicates possible over-feeding, too many fish, or inadequate biological filtration
